GoalGPT: A GPT-4 powered OKR generator

ChatGPT may as well have broken the Internet.

Some sceptics are pointing out the blind spots of the AI language model, arguing that it's not yet able to solve complex problems or that it can easily be fooled.

But that's looking at it the wrong way.

ChatGPT and the underlying GPT-3 language model aren't here to replace us. They're here to assist us, and they're about to unlock an unprecedented amount of productivity.

What's the difference between ChatGPT and GPT-4?

Both ChatGPT and GPT-4 are language models developed by OpenAI. They allow us to get answers from prompts written as if we were talking to another human.

The difference is the output:

  • ChatGPT generates human-like text in its response and makes the experience feel like having a conversation.
  • GPT-4 is a general-purpose language model that can be accessed via an API.

It is like having a work buddy that has an insane amount of general knowledge. Curious about the sequence of moves for the Sicilian Defense? Ask ChatGPT. Need suggestions for the title of your blog post? Ask ChatGPT. The best KPIs for DevOps? Ask ChatGPT.

And guess what? It also knows about OKRs.

You can ask ChatGPT for an example of OKRs to increase your social media presence, and it will gladly give you something to think about.

Using AI and GPT-4 to generate draft OKRs

Setting OKRs is hard. This is in part because we spent most of our weeks focused on outputs. Then, you suddenly have to switch mindset at the end of the quarter to figure out the right outcomes to focus on for the next 3 months. Even seasoned OKR leaders have a hard time with the framework.

The language models built by OpenAI can help us a lot by quickly providing suggestions that we can use as starting point. The issue is that ChatGPT can be quite verbose, and the output can take some time to import back into the tool you use to track progress on your OKRs.

We decided to solve this problem by embedding a goal-setting assistant directly in Tability that can generate OKRs with the help of GPT-4.
